Weaver’s Way Co-op

Chestnut Hill Market

Philadelphia, PA

Weavers Way purchased a run-down, three-story property with a vacant grocery store to develop into the Co-op’s Chestnut Hill Market. O Z Collaborative (formerly BWA) provided a feasibility study and subsequent renovation design for the new market. Key challenges included severely deteriorated roofs, ground water incursion, structural deficiencies, antiquated building systems, and life-safety problems.

Taking five contiguous structures, the design team organized the many store functions to fit within the constraints of the existing bearing walls, creating continuity for shoppers and staff. Sensitive to the historical context of the Chestnut Hill Business District, OZC designed a new 60-foot-long traditional storefront inspired by the nearby circa 1900 architecture.
